Gumbo a Go Go

I met a friend for lunch the other day at Gumbo a Go Go.   Honestly, I hadn’t really even heard about this place until he mentioned it to me.   I am a fan of Cajun food in general, so of course I was game.   This is more of the slow cooked types of Cajun food—things like gumbo (obviously), étouffées, jambalaya, etc.   None of the po boy type sandwiches or fried items on their menu. So I went   for a combo plate with 2 items (regular size, they also have a larger size) ($7).   On mine, I chose shrimp étouffée and chicken yaya.   The étouffée was only okay—it is a lighter colored roux flavored with Cajun seasonings, but this one was a little bland.   There were several good sized shrimp in there—I am thinking they threw them in just before serving, probably so they wouldn’t get rubbery, but they didn’t taste very seasoned either.   Not sure how to remedy this, maybe crawfish would have been a better choice, because it doesn’t get as r...

Lucky Lou Seafood Restaurant

I met my friend @zigged the other day for some dim sum at Lucky Lou’s (I told you I’ve been having a dumpling issue lately). I hadn’t been since this place changed names from On Time—not sure what the deal is there, but they still have some carry out menus from there as well.  Anyhow, they give you a big picture menu to order from (I am finding out the little carts pushed around the restaurant don’t seem to exist in the Midwest—even in Chicago’s Chinatown). We chose a bunch of stuff. The first couple of things they brought us were the fried bits (You know I like my mix of crunchy and steamed). There were fried shrimp balls ($3.50) and spring rolls ($2.60). I would say these two things were two of the highlights. The shrimp balls tasted just like they were ground shrimp formed into balls and lightly fried. They were quite dense and filling. JT's Grille & Bar

On the hunt for yet another new breakfast spot, the family and I decided to give JT’s a try—it is in the former location of Just Judy’s.   It is a similar menu and while the interior has been somewhat redecorated, it is not too different.   The kids are fans of breakfast in general (particularly French toast) so it is a meal that is easy to get everyone to agree on.   They also have a wide-ranging menu including lunch items, so if you go in the late morning you can go either way (as we did). I had my standard breakfast (which here is appropriately called “Mom’s Breakfast”)—2 eggs over easy, bacon, toast and I again decided to try their version of the hash brown casserole ($5.49 + $2.95 for the casserole).  The eggs were pretty good (one was a little overdone) and the bacon was decent--crisp on the edge and a good flavor.  The toast was cut really thick and had little butter on it, so it wasn’t my favorite.  The most disappointing thing was the hash brown ca...
