Gumbo a Go Go

I met a friend for lunch the other day at Gumbo a Go Go.   Honestly, I hadn’t really even heard about this place until he mentioned it to me.   I am a fan of Cajun food in general, so of course I was game.   This is more of the slow cooked types of Cajun food—things like gumbo (obviously), étouffées, jambalaya, etc.   None of the po boy type sandwiches or fried items on their menu. So I went   for a combo plate with 2 items (regular size, they also have a larger size) ($7).   On mine, I chose shrimp étouffée and chicken yaya.   The étouffée was only okay—it is a lighter colored roux flavored with Cajun seasonings, but this one was a little bland.   There were several good sized shrimp in there—I am thinking they threw them in just before serving, probably so they wouldn’t get rubbery, but they didn’t taste very seasoned either.   Not sure how to remedy this, maybe crawfish would have been a better choice, because it doesn’t get as r...

JT's Grille & Bar

On the hunt for yet another new breakfast spot, the family and I decided to give JT’s a try—it is in the former location of Just Judy’s.   It is a similar menu and while the interior has been somewhat redecorated, it is not too different.   The kids are fans of breakfast in general (particularly French toast) so it is a meal that is easy to get everyone to agree on.   They also have a wide-ranging menu including lunch items, so if you go in the late morning you can go either way (as we did). I had my standard breakfast (which here is appropriately called “Mom’s Breakfast”)—2 eggs over easy, bacon, toast and I again decided to try their version of the hash brown casserole ($5.49 + $2.95 for the casserole).  The eggs were pretty good (one was a little overdone) and the bacon was decent--crisp on the edge and a good flavor.  The toast was cut really thick and had little butter on it, so it wasn’t my favorite.  The most disappointing thing was the hash brown ca...

The Libertine-Revisit

So, if you have been following me lately, you know I am a fan of The Libertine.   I have been excited to see they have been pretty well fully booked with reservations a couple of times when I have tried to make a reservation lately (so happy they are taking reservations now). It makes me happy to see a place I really like be successful, even if it means I can’t go that night.   But the other night, we did get a table reserved and went in to try out the latest menu.   We started with the artichoke fritters ($8) and the famer’s cheese and olive tapenade crostini ($10).   Both were good, but the artichoke fritters were our clear winner of the two.   There were 5 little crispy fried balls that were chock full of artichoke and artichoke flavor.   There was a distinct lemon flavor as well and a wonderful cilantro aioli to dip in.   We really liked these, to the point we had to cut the last one in half to make sure we were exactly even (often hubby eats more ...
